Why they
walked away.

Sometimes clarity means saying no.

A couple seen from behind on a quiet evening street, the search still open.

On every measure a spreadsheet respects, it was the right decision. The numbers worked. The suburb was rising. The finance was ready, and walking away meant starting the whole exhausting search again.

They walked away anyway.

Not on a feeling. On the opposite of one. The clearer they became about what they actually needed, the more obvious it was that this house answered someone else's question, not theirs. It was a good property. It simply wasn't good for them, and they had finally learned to tell the difference.

Saying no cost them three more months and a second round of hope and disappointment. It also saved them from the quiet, expensive mistake of buying something sensible they'd have spent a decade trying to feel at home in.

Clarity doesn't always feel like progress. Sometimes it looks like leaving.

The best decision they made that year was the house they didn't buy.
