When more space
wasn't the answer.
What they were really looking for.

For two years the brief never changed: more space. A bigger house, another bedroom, somewhere the family could spread out. Every inspection was measured against it, and every house fell short in the same way. Never quite enough room.
What they were actually short of wasn't space. It was time together in the space they already had. The bigger house meant a bigger mortgage and a longer drive. More hours spent paying for rooms they'd rarely be in the same one of.
When they said it plainly, that the problem wasn't the house, it was the pace, the search changed shape entirely. They stopped looking for more and started looking for closer. Closer to work, to school, to the ordinary evenings that were the whole point.
They bought a smaller house, ten minutes from everything. One fewer bedroom than the brief demanded, and far more of the thing they were really looking for.
“More space” was never the answer. It was just the easiest thing to ask for.
